Sylvia

After twenty-two years of suburban child-rearing, Greg and Kate are finally enjoying their next chapter in Manhattan. Kate’s teaching career is soaring, Greg’s finance career is winding down—and then Sylvia bounds into their lives.

Found (or perhaps chosen) by Greg in Central Park, Sylvia is a sprightly, streetwise dog with a sharp wit, a mind of her own, and a surprising knack for stirring up trouble. As Greg becomes increasingly enchanted with his new canine companion, Kate sees Sylvia not just as a dog, but as a high-spirited rival for her husband’s affections.

What unfolds is a clever, heartwarming, and delightfully offbeat exploration of modern relationships, identity, and the unexpected ways we find connection.

With equal parts bite and charm, Sylvia is a sophisticated romp that asks: who’s really in the doghouse?

“Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes, but none is as immediately delicious and dizzy as the one that begins the redeeming affair in A.R. Gurney’s new comedy, SYLVIA…” —The New York Times.

“I can only call it one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound
plays I have ever seen…” —New York Daily News.

“Gurney’s mad comedy is the most endearing good time to trot down the pike in many a
moon. Howlingly funny…” —BackStage.

Sylvia contains adult language and situations. Parental Guidance is suggested.
